Ontari

Ontari is a name I came across on the TV series The 100, a post-apocalyptic science-fiction show loosely based on the novel series by Kass Morgan. I’ve never read the books but the show is a great series that has only gotten better over the years. The seventh and final season will premiere later this month which I’m very much looking forward to.

Ontari is a recurring character in the third season, one of the  antagonists. My first thought hearing the name was it had to be connected to Ontario, a province in Canada, and it turns out I was right. Ontari’s name derives from Ontario, which itself is named after Lake Ontario, which derives from the Wyandot language ontari:io meaning “great lake”; Wyandot being an Iroquoian language spoken by the Wyandot (sometimes spelled Wendat) people. Wyandot descends from the Huron language.

Ontari is also a Telugu word meaning “alone, single”.

Origin: Wyandot; Telugu

Meaning: great lake (Wyandot); alone, single (Telugu)

Usage: Telugu, English
