Alona is the feminine form of Alon, a Hebrew male name meaning “oak tree”, a cognate of Akkadian ‘allanu, alyānu (oak; acorn), which seems to be borrowed from Sumerian allanum (oak; acorn).

Alona is also the name of a genus of plants in the nightshade family native to Chile.
