Adlai is the name of a minor character in the Old Testament, the father of Shaphat, one of King David‘s officials. The meaning of the name seems uncertain- I’ve seen it listed meaning “refuge” though I’ve also seen it listed as meaning “Yahweh is just” or “justice of the lord” composed of Hebrew edl עדל (to be just, equitable) and yah יה (contacted form of Yahweh).
Adlai may also be a contracted form of Adalia, also the name of a minor character in the Old Testament, one of the sons of Haman (the antagonist in the Book of Esther, who plotted to have all the Jews in the Persian empire killed). It’s possible that Adalia‘s name may be of Persian origin of unknown meaning.
