Tilia

Tilia is the name of a genus of trees in the linden and lime family, which may be derived from a pre-Greek origin. It could also be used as a shortened form of Ottilia, the Swedish form of Germanic Odilia, which either derives from Germanic element aud meaning “wealth, fortune” via Proto-Germanic *audaz (wealth, riches), or from Germanic odal meaning “fatherland”, which in both cases derive from a Proto-Germanic origin though of uncertain etymology.

Origin: uncertain, likely pre-Greek; Proto-Germanic

Meaning: “linden tree”; a shortened form of Otilia/Ottilia “wealth, fortune” or “fatherland”

Usage: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish
