Quillan comes from an Irish surname, a shortened form of McQuillan, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Uighilín meaning “son of Huguelin”, Huguelin being a double diminutive of Hugh meaning “heart, thought, mind, spirit”; though it could also be an anglicized form of McCullen/Mac Cuilinn “son of Cuileann”, the latter a byname from Irish cuileann meaning “holly”.
