Jonas

Jonas is the Latinized form of Ionas, the Greek form of Hebrew Jonah, the name of a minor prophet in the Old Testament, who is cast out to sea and gets swallowed up by a giant sea creature. The name derives from yonah  יוֹנָה (dove, pigeon) via Proto-Semitic *šawmān (dove).

Jonas is also a Lithuanian name, in this case deriving as the Lithuanian form of Johna shortened form of Hebrew Yohanan meaning “god is gracious”.

Jonas is also a surname originating from the given name.
